GitHub is where the world builds software together. It's built on Git, and it's how developers save their work, share it, and improve each other's code. Here's the idea in three parts.
01 · Git
Git records every change you make as a commit. You can look back, undo a mistake, or try an idea on a branch without breaking what already works.
02 · GitHub
GitHub keeps your Git projects — called repositories — online, so they're backed up, easy to share, and open to working on with anyone, from anywhere.
03 · Pull requests
Someone suggests a change, others review it, and when it's right it's merged in. That's how teams — and the whole open-source world — make software.
Why it matters for you: it's how real software teams work, it's the heart of open source, and your GitHub profile becomes a portfolio that recruiters and collaborators can actually see.

GitHub changes every week. These are the latest headlines from its official changelog — the same news developers get in their inbox.
Organization and enterprise administrators can now see AI Scan for pull requests enablement status in the security overview coverage view.
Secret scanning now detects new secret types from Lovable Labs, Pydantic Services Inc., and Supabase.
The staged rollout of the stateless GitHub App installation token format, which began on April 27, 2026, is complete.
You can now request a GitHub Copilot code review through the REST and GraphQL APIs and set the review effort level for each request.
We're the GitHub Community Club at GITAM University Bengaluru — students helping students learn the tools real software teams use. You don't need any experience: we start from the basics and build up together.

Architecture & Strategy crew
Designs the branching strategy for the club's big projects, writes the PR templates and .gitignore files, and untangles the merge conflicts newer members run into.
Repository health / Git architect · GitHub access: Maintain
The last line of defence for the codebase: reviews incoming pull requests against the style guide, suggests improvements, and decides when code is clean enough to merge.
Senior code reviewer / QA lead · GitHub access: Write · Maintain
Watches what's new and relevant in tech — APIs, open-source trends, frameworks — and turns it into project blueprints: two or three realistic options each semester, with the stack each one needs.
Technology strategist / stack cartographer · GitHub access: Triage
Automation & Pipeline crew
Writes the GitHub Actions workflows that run tests, check links and lint every pull request automatically.
DevOps / CI-CD engineer · GitHub access: Maintain
Watches security alerts, makes sure nobody commits API keys or passwords, and keeps dependencies patched with Dependabot.
DevSecOps / AppSec engineer · GitHub access: Maintain · Admin
Execution & Onboarding crew
Turns vague project ideas into clear, bite-sized issues, and keeps good-first-issue tasks ready on the Projects board for new members.
Technical product owner / triage lead · GitHub access: Triage
Builds small proof-of-concept apps to try new frameworks and APIs before a project starts, and finds open-source projects members can contribute to.
R&D / open-source scout · GitHub access: Write
Bridges the gap between knowing a little code and a first real contribution: runs a practice repository with gentle starter issues and walks beginners through cloning, branching and their first pull request.
Developer advocate / code sherpa · GitHub access: Maintain (practice repo) · Triage
Level I is where everyone starts; II and III come with experience and the trust to review others' work.

Our flagship technical event in December: two days of workshops, coding competitions and 20+ interactive booths — run on its own currency, Epoch Coins.
supportcat commented
Everyone starts with 398 Epoch Coins, credited at check-in. Spend them at booths and on merch, and top up at recharge points. The ticket price (if any) hasn't been decided yet.
supportcat commented
Yes. Recharge points run mini-games — trivia, quick coding puzzles — worth around 20 coins. Each recharge point works once per person.
supportcat commented
No. The year starts with a beginner session, Learn GitHub & Make Your First Contribution, and every event is built to be approachable.
